COMMENTS OF THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE CONFERENCE

Svietliena Vadko (Kharkiv): “For many directors, lighting artists, scenographers who gathered at the residence, it became a great opportunity to realize their ideas, to work in various teams. Also we were from different cities, we managed to organize a strong team, especially the artists, we managed to work with different directors. We made 15 musical compositions. It was difficult on the one hand, but on the other hand I would like to thank our tutors who supported and helped us.

For example, I am a sand animation artist and multimedia designer. I had an opportunity to work with new content, visualize beautiful music that was "live" – thanks to the symphonic orchestra conducted by Dmytro Morozov. It was a synthesis of live music, "here and now", and it is a very important aspect! Working using a phonogram is one thing, but "here and now" you feel how the audience is filled with emotions – and it's impressive! Another aspect for which I would like to express my gratitude to the residence is the opportunity to work with the best “Panasonic” projector available in Ukraine. This is a very high standard, you know. So, this experiment was extremely impressive".

Pavlo Koshka (Odesa): “I am always glad to have an opportunity to learn something new. And when you already work in the theater, there is not always such a possibility. For this "my hat’s off" to the organizers, because it's a really cool event for those involved in the theatrical sphere and musical theater, when directors, artists, lighting artists can get together and learn and create something new, feel themselves in some new circumstances. Creating a performance without artists… How is this possible? On September 3, the audience saw that it is possible, that it can be made in different, very cool and interesting ways.

I can’t help mentioning the extremely powerful team of SKHID OPERA, it was very easy and pleasant to work with them. Everyone put their best efforts in order to achieve a significant result, and everything turned out very well. I hope that such residences will continue, that the number of participants will increase, because the Ukrainian musical theater in Ukraine can further develop, can become the best in Europe and in the world. We have all the prerequisites for this.

I am inspired by these new acquaintances. It is very important that the light in theater, in musical theatre in particular, is not just something that services the artists so that they can see where to go. It is a special language of expression of actions and thoughts of an artist. That's why, back here in Odesa, I’m telling everyone how cool it was in Kharkiv!”

Nataliia Kotsar (Dnipro): "First of all, here at this residence, my “waking dream” came true – to remove everyone from the stage. After all, you always want a decoration to be there, and no one to spoil it /laughing/.  Adding here props, hanging costumes, plus stage mechanics… And finally such an opportunity came true! In general, I love this stage, I really wanted to try its mechanics, which I did. My greatest gratitude to Dmytro Morozov for his crazy work with the orchestra – even in a low-quality working video, the orchestra sounds like in a clean phonogram.

Then it was this 4K "Panasonic", which I just wanted to kiss and hug! And, of course, I wanted to explore its capabilities in order to open the space from two sides. The attitude of the administration was also unique – they allowed me use the theater storages, take anything I needed, attract theatre workshops to my work… I understand how difficult it is. And, of course, the work of our tutors – they became "breakwaters" to create for us only a creative atmosphere. We were free to do whatever we wanted, without having to worry about the organizational issues. This was a real happiness! Many thanks to them, this is extremely important. And one more thing to mention…

In general, I had a desire to meet here "fellow" artists, I went here to communicate, talk, watch and listen. For a moment I felt myself like a large databank with flash drives inserted, and information was being downloaded into me, in great volumes and very fast. And at the same time it was still necessary to come up with a project… But this experience brings its benefits, and will continue to be useful in future, it is already happening. The experience is crazy – and I want more! Can’t help mentioning our lecturers on lighting, 3D design… They were incredible! It’s great that they managed to find time in their crazy schedules, that they are not indifferent, that they wanted to give us all the "keys", everything, just take it! It is important that all this was recorded, and the management of any theater can see how it was all born, look "behind the scene".

More information about the master classes: if you take a look at the records, you will see that it is not actors, who are engaged in this process, but people, who are not moving or speaking on the stage, who are actually hiding. I mean artists, lighting engineers. And the aim of this master class was to make them move, turn around, literally feel each other's backs – this is what happened during this master class… I think it was a starting point from which the work began. Because professional training of directors is generally focused on "unblocking" the consciousness, but the lighting engineers, for instance, are always "hiding". Artists are trained to produce a certain result through some form of themselves. Theatrical artists are sometimes attracted by some kind of performances. But we were trained in ordinary institutes, so we used to work inside ourselves and present a certain object. And here we started moving, we started talking – that is a great achievement.

Liubov Dushyna: Regarding my impressions… For every creator his resources are a part of him.  And here we had incredible resources! There were so many discoveries in which I wanted to dig as deep as possible. The second important point is the large number of new acquaintances and people, with whom you want to perform creative projects in the future. And very soon it will happen. But, so far, it is secret – but, well, a small announcement is possible. The quadrennial of scenography is going to be held in Lviv soon, and I was invited to create an installation for it. I invited Tetiana Voronova as my partner – we will work together on this project. I hope it will be a mutually beneficial collaboration.

Tetiana Voronova: Thank you for the announcement, Liubov. I hope when a video will be available, we will be able share our surveys and ideas. I hope it will be an interesting experience. Thanks to the residence, Liubov and I found each other in the working progress, and now we are going to continue collaborating in other spaces, with other capabilities.

I would like to note the most valuable aspect in the residence to my opinion. It is friendship, exchange of experience – something that only a few projects can grant you. Thanks to the residence we were able to hear and see how people work, how they think, how they feel. From this point of view, you can figure out with whom you would like to continue cooperation in the future. Another great benefit: we all had a feeling that we are changing the theater. Really potentially changing it! We have every opportunity to do it. And we stopped considering the space of an opera theatre as some stationary thing that is not subject to changes.

Here we had a feeling that we can move on, we can come up with new ideas, enrich the atmosphere of the opera theatre. We can expand the possibilities of perception of opera art, because it is an academic and complex art, and it is not ease to reform it. Wagner wanted to reform it – but not all of his ideas and aspirations succeeded. And many other artists tried to reform it… This must be done gradually. But progress is necessary! And thanks to the residence, we have managed to form a direction for further movement, a certain vector of development.

I would also like to thank our tutors for their invaluable experience of connecting us into creative links, for their help in communication with each other and for establishing a working relationship. The human factor is a key moment in this process. Everyone has different characters, different perceptions, and our tutors performed an enormous work to put us together – thanks to master classes, we managed to create great etudes with you. The etude method was very interesting. It proved that not only directors and actors can do it, but we, as well as the scenographers and lighting artists can also participate in this process.

For me, the best measure of quality of any performance, concert or project is the desire to do more. And in this case this desire was more than ever! This means that it will sure be realized in the future! My other wish is to make such meetings more frequent – not once a year at the residence, but twice or three times. At this point I can give you an idea of creating something else, an after party, some new joint work to do. Thank you very much!

ON BEHALF OF THE TUTORS, AN IMPORTANT ISSUE WAS RAISED BY THE CHIEF CONDUCTOR OF SKHID OPERA, HONOURED ARTIST OF UKRAINE DMYTRO MOROZOV.

Dmytro Morozov: Tetiana Voronova said very well that some people "fly on airplanes" and others "ride a bicycle"… I would like to say that with our current team of the Kharkiv National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after M.V. Lysenko / SKHID OPERA, namely, the Director General-Artistic Director, Honoured Artist of Ukraine Oleg

Orishchenko, his First Deputy, Honoured Artist of Ukraine Igor Tuluzov and the whole creative team of the theater we will never again "ride a bicycle". Kharkiv Opera always leads the way.

During 4-5 years we have shown how to turn a peripheral theater into one of the leading theaters of the state. And our recent premieres are the brightest illustration of this thesis. Both "Spartacus", "Swan Lake. Water Fantasy" and "The Love for Three Oranges", they all feature a lot of interesting and new trends. They incorporate a lot of new technologies that have never been used in opera or ballet before.

We break down stereotypes of thinking and show what we can create on the stage. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation pays attention to our projects, because we are making the first steps, not typical for cultural and art institutions, at the same time realizing certain risks. However, the implementation of our projects justifies all the risks. And the next premiere of our theater – the opera "Cinderella" by J. Massenet – will be demonstrated using new technologies and stage lighting, new costumes, 3D projections, and with unusual directing solutions. You see, without a specific plan of development for 3-5-7 years this would be impossible. That's why we are planning in advance and looking for new artist to invite – this is the main goal of our residence.

The most interesting thing in this residence, in my opinion, is that all of its participants demonstrated their creative thinking. Such phenomenon as plagiarism is completely absent in this case. There are only own thoughts of the lighting artists, directors and set designers – and that is it the most valuable point!
